In December 1999, the Department of Earth Sciences (formerly known as Department of Geology and Geophysics) was created and in 2001 we got the first batch of students for M Sc Applied Geology program. In 2004 the department has started PG Diploma in Remote Sensing and GIS. In 2010 the department started M Sc in Geoinformatics. The Department of Earth Sciences offers outstanding disciplinary and interdisciplinary education, running two Post Graduate courses in Applied Geology and Geoinformatics. We give more emphasison field work and laboratory experiments with vibrant interactions between faculty and students. We expand experiential learning opportunities for our students through field courses and field trips in different parts of the Country and the Himalaya.

We have many broad and overlapping areas of research focus including the solid earth, surface processes, hydrology,cryosphere, atmosphere, etc.Most of the research carried out at the Department of Earth Sciences has tremendous societal applications. We have maintained extensive research collaborations with Local, National and International Agencies/ Institutions/ Universities.Our students are highly recruited with excellent placement by educational and research institutions, government agencies, and private sector.
