Welcome to the Department of Geology, University of Kashmir, Srinagar. Whether you are a prospective student considering our postgraduate or integrated programmes, a researcher interested in our scientific activities, an industry partner seeking consultancy, or simply exploring our department, we warmly welcome you to learn more about our academic community.

Established in 2000 (formerly the Department of Earth Sciences), the Department admitted its first batch of students to the M.Sc. Applied Geology programme in 2001. In 2004, the Department introduced a Postgraduate Diploma in Remote Sensing and GIS under the FIST Programme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. Building upon this success, the Department launched the M.Sc. Geoinformatics programme in 2010, which subsequently evolved into an independent Department of Geoinformatics in 2019. Continuing its commitment to academic excellence, the Department introduced a Five-Year Integrated Programme in Applied Geology in 2026, in addition to its flagship postgraduate programme.

The Department is dedicated to providing high-quality education through a balanced combination of classroom teaching, laboratory training, field investigations, and research. We place strong emphasis on experiential learning, offering extensive field courses and geological excursions across the Himalaya and other geologically significant regions of India. Close interaction among faculty, students, industry, and society ensures that our graduates develop the scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and practical skills required to address contemporary geoscientific challenges.

Our research spans a broad spectrum of Earth system sciences, including solid Earth processes, geomorphology, hydrogeology, hydrochemistry, cryosphere studies, climate change, environmental geology, geophysics, geochemistry, remote sensing, GIS, and natural hazard assessment. The Department actively contributes to addressing pressing societal issues such as groundwater security, climate resilience, sustainable resource management, and disaster risk reduction through interdisciplinary research and innovation.

The Department maintains strong collaborations with national and international universities, research institutions, government organizations, and industry partners, fostering multidisciplinary research and providing students with valuable opportunities for academic exchange and professional development.

Our graduates have established successful careers in universities, research institutions, government organizations, geological surveys, environmental consultancies, and the private sector, reflecting the Department's commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and professional training.

At the Department of Geology, we are committed to advancing quality education, impactful research, innovation, and public service, while nurturing the next generation of geoscientists equipped to understand and sustainably manage Earth's dynamic systems.

We invite you to explore our programmes, research activities, facilities, and achievements, and become part of our vibrant academic community.
