In 2000, the Department of Earth Sciences (formerly known as Department of Geology and Geophysics) was created and in 2001 we got the first batch of students for M.Sc Applied Geology program. In 2004 the department has started PG Diploma in Remote Sensing and GIS under the FIST program of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. In 2010 the Department has started M.Sc in Geoinformatics which has evolved as a separate Department from 2019. The Department of Earth Sciences offers outstanding disciplinary and interdisciplinary education, running Post Graduate course in Applied Geology. We give more emphasis on field work and laboratory/ field experiments with vibrant interactions between faculty, students, industry and society. We expand experiential learning opportunities for our students through field courses and field trips in different parts of the Country and the Himalaya.

We have many broad and overlapping areas of research focus including the solid earth, surface processes, hydrology, cryosphere, atmosphere, etc. Most of the research carried out at the Department of Earth Sciences has tremendous societal and industrial applications. We have maintained extensive research collaborations with Local, National and International Agencies/ Institutions/ Universities. Our students are highly recruited with excellent placement by educational and research institutions, government agencies, and private sector.
